22 SHIPS, a tapas bar by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton is named after its address on the quaint Ship Street in Wan Chai. With a buzzy ambience and neighbourhood attitude, the tapas bar brings a unique flavour and vibe to complement Ship Street’s casual
and easy-going nature. The buzz focuses on Atherton’s creative tapas menu which represents the modern face of dining — outstanding food that is reasonably priced.
Blending into the neighbourhood with a balance of vintage touches and modern charm, the intimate venue designed by Neri & Hu Design Research Office (NHDRO), offers inside table and communal bar seating, as well as relaxed al fresco dining and drinking.
22 Ships is also the creation of entrepreneur Yenn Wong, founder of JIA Boutique Hotels group and Sheung Wan’s buzzy restaurant and bar 208 Duecento Otto, and Michelin-starred Chef Jason Atherton of London’s Pollen Street Social fame. The JIA Group currently consists of a collection of award-wining hotels and restaurants in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai.
Showcasing the world of Sherry, 22Ships is focused on offering the most comprehensive Sherry list in Asia. Restaurant Manager Josef Murray is passionate about a “revival” of the world’s oldest wine, helping diners gain an in-depth knowledge and appreciation for this unique style of wine produced in Jerez, Andalucía, Southern Spain. Sherry and food have had a constant relation for centuries and we have managed to get our hands on some very rare and wonderful bottles for our guests to enjoy.
Jason Atherton was the first British chef to complete a stage at Spain's famous el Bulli restaurant in 1998. This invaluable experience laid the foundation for his unique creative style and fueled his insatiable thirst for culinary knowledge.
Jason launched his own restaurant company, Jason Atherton Ltd in 2010 with the opening of his first independent venture Table No.1 in Shanghai. His flagship restaurant ‘Pollen Street Social’ opened in April 2011 in Mayfair and was awarded a coveted Michelin star within just six months of opening. It was awarded 4 A4 Rosettes by the AA Guide, named The Good Food Guide’s ‘Best New Restaurant’ and hailed the sixth best restaurant in the UK.
Since then Jason’s portfolio of restaurants has spread internationally to include Esquina in Singapore in 2011; Pollen and Keong Saik Snacks, Singapore and 22 Ships, Hong Kong in 2012. 2013 openings included The Commune Social Shanghai, Little Social, Social Eating House, Berners Tavern in London and jamón bar Ham & Sherry in Hong Kong. Opening in mid 2014 will be City Social, at London’s Tower 42, a new restaurant at Town Hall in London, Aberdeen Street Social, his third eatery in Hong Kong as well as his first venture in Dubai in September.
Jason Atherton has written 2 bestselling cookbooks “Maze” and ‘Gourmet Food for a Fiver”. He currently hosts the popular BBC series “Great British Menu”, co-hosts the new competitive cookery show “My Kitchen Rules’ and is a regular guest on “Saturday Kitchen”. Jason was also recently appointed Food & Drink Ambassador for Great Britain by the British Prime Minister.
With passion, dedication and a strong Michelin background, Nathan Green joined 22 Ships as Executive Chef in March 2014. A seasoned British chef, Nate came to Hong Kong from his position as Head Chef at Tom Sellers’ Restaurant Story, London, which was awarded a Michelin Star in just 3 months of opening, the fastest in the history of the guide, and Three AA Rosettes for 2014. Nate has worked with renowned establishments, such as Tom Aikens, Arbutus and The Square and was hand-picked by Jason Atherton for the role at 22 Ships and to represent him in his Hong Kong eatery.
